The number of people facing acute food insecurity has been increasing significantly, with 258 million people in 58 countries experiencing this in 2022, a 34% increase from the previous year. This rise has undone progress made in reducing hunger since the launch of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. If current trends continue, the goal of ending hunger by 2030 may not be achieved. Economic factors, violent conflict, and extreme weather events are the main causes of food insecurity in affected countries, with rising food prices, inflation, disrupted trade flows, higher production costs, and low household incomes being key contributors.
